Gave Chase
Open the door
Always A second behind
No worries
No fears
Dark thirty very near
Could not him
Brown with a hint of red
Saw one
then two
Called out
Once then twice
Where are three
Called out again
Where are you
I knew he was there
In the shadows of the street light
I was only a second behind
How could I lose him?
I called out
I yelled out
I cried out
Fear in my voice
Jack
JACK
I saw movement
Here he is
Walking towards me
There was something in his mouth
He me toward me
With a proud gallop
Proud and happily he trotted
I said Jack come here to me
When I called
He came
Closer and closer
I was appalled and stepped back
What he had in his jaws
His trophy to me as I called him back
I cried drop it
Leave it
Leave it
Drop it NOW!
He dropped it and looked at me
With curiosity
He stepped toward me
looked at his prize
looked at his prize
The creature did not move
Was it dead
I cried
NO
I yelled at him
You don’t kill anything
He knew I was mad but not as to why
I said come inside
All three came with me
As I peeked back
The creature did not move
I cried over the phone
My husband did not understand why
Off to work
Still dark outside
Before leaving in the truck
I peeked into the backyard
Where is it
It move
I feared it moved somewhere
Off to die
In peace
A sad and lonely
Painful way to die
I cried
At work I tried
Not to think about it
Not one bit
I did
Once at home I looked for it
I saw nothing
I looked for its body
Nothing
My daughter said that
It might have been playing dead
Like a opossum
Laying in the dark for the safety to move
Move in the night like a bugler out of site
So it could run and hide
And
Live
I was happy at this thought
That I could not find the creature that Jack caught
Happy that my dog that gave chase
Did not end a life
At least that is what I hope
Having never witnessed a chase end in a catch
End in death
I was and am happy that the chase ended in LIFE

Come home to play and love that all dogs give
Time for bed play is done
Still on the edge
Where you seem to stay
You let the dogs in the bed

They hog the bed

Only thing left is to love life and live on the edge
